NG's Football Championship Finals

As part of the National Guard's athletic activities, the final of its internal football championship was held on Thursday, December 6th, 2018 at 14:00, at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia.
In the final, the teams of the 6th and 7th Infantry Brigades were qualified, through a series of matches with the participation of all Formations and Commands of the NG.
The two teams gave the attendees a very beautiful spectacle, and after a brilliant match the winning team, on penalty process, was the 2nd Brigade one.
The football match was attended by the Minister of Defence Mr Savvas Angelides, the Commissioner for Volunteering and Non Governmental Organizations Mr Giannis Giannakis, the Hierarchy of the NGGS, the President of the Cyprus Sports Organization Mr Kleanthis Georgiades, the Vice President of the Cyprus Football Assosiation Mr Kostas Michailides, the President of the Pancyprian Footballers Association Mr Neophytides Spyros, a representative of the Pancyprian Gymnastic Association, Commanders of Formations and Commands of NG, executive’s and soldier’s delegations and other guests.
In the framework of the event, and especially during the half-time break, the finals of the internal championship of the military sports, took place with the conduct of the military sports of:
  • Tug of war, where the winning team was the one of the Special Forces Command
  • Rapid dismantling and assembling of a rifle, where the winning team was the one of the 2nd Brigade and
  • Transportation of a “wounded” soldier at a 100m distance, where the winning team was the one of the 2nd Brigade.
After the end of the match, the Minister of Defense and the Chief of the NG, after congratulated both the finalists, awarded the cups to the contestants.
At a special moment the veteran footballer and the unique Greek Cypriot who played with the football team of the National Team of Hellenic Armed Forces in 1965 as well as with the National Football team of Cyprus, Mr. Andreas Pakkos, was awarded by the National Guard.
The attendees were able to contribute to the charitable fundraiser, which took place in cooperation with the Office of the Volunteer Commission and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), for the benefit of a charity.
