Meeting of Chief of Cyprus National Guard with US Army CoS

Τhe US Army Chief of Staff, General Mark A. Milley, had a short stopover in Cyprus for a visit to the British Bases, during which he met with the Chief of National Guard, Lt. General Ilias Leontaris.

The meeting took place in Larnaca airport, attended by the US Ambassador, the UK High Commissioner, the US and UK Defense Attachés, as well as National Guard staff officers.

The Chief of the National Guard briefed General Milley on developments in the Cyprus issue, the hydrocarbon investigations in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus and the attitude of Turkey, as well as the organization, operation and evolution of the National Guard.

In addition, reference was made to developments in the wider region, defense cooperation of Cyprus with countries of the region and its participation in the Common Security and Defense Policy of the European Union.

They also discussed areas of common interest and possible further bilateral co-operation in the fields of education, training, exercises and potential facilities support, within the framework that the Republic of Cyprus is providing to other countries.

General Milley thanked the Chief of National Guard for the briefing and informed him about his tour in the region.
