United Nations

The United Nations was founded in 1945 with the aims of brokering and maintaining world peace and security, improving relations between member states, encouraging social advancement, upholding human rights laws and the bettering the standard of living of its member states. Cyprus has been a member of the United Nations since the 20th of September 1960. In a bid to deal with the increasing demand for Military Personnel in Peacekeeping Operations and ensure a swift response timeline to international incidents, the United Nations have formed the United Nations Standby Arrangements System, which relates to commitments agreed upon by member states, through the ratification of specific Mutual-Consent Memorandums. It is therefore of significance, that the Republic of Cyprus is bound by a Mutual-Consent Memorandum which asserts its obligation to provide active military personnel in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations.
