Events on Armed Forces Day- 55 years of the National Guard
With brightness, religious reverence and respect, on Sunday the 8th of September 2019, the Republic of Cyprus’ Armed Forces Day was celebrated with a doxology at Agia Sophia Church in Strovolos, under the leadership of the incumbent archbishop of Cyprus, Chrysostomos II
At the doxology, Minister of Defense, Mr. Savvas Angelides participated representing the President of the Republic of Cyprus, as well the representative of the President of the Parliament and member of the House Standing Committee on Defense Affairs, Mr. Giorgos Karoullas, The Ambassador of Greece in Cyprus Mr. Ilias Fotopoulos, politicians, The Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General, Ilias Leontaris, the hierarchy of the National Guard’s General Staff, the Commander of the Greek Forces in Cyprus, representatives of associations, and representatives from the three branches of the National Guard: The Army, The Navy and The Air Force.
Dr. Andreas Karios, a professor at the department of Humanities and Human Sciences of the Open University of Cyprus, delivered a speech in which he mentioned that even though the Armed Forces of the Republic of Cyprus has lived on for just 55 years, our country can be proud that has always be present in the struggles of Hellenism.
Through a historical presentation that mentioned the most important events in the history of Hellenism, ranging from the Greek Rebellion to the current developments that Republic of Cyprus is facing, Dr. Karios presented the formation of the National Guard and how it has evolved through the battles and the sacrifices made by the heroes of the nation.
When concluding his speech, he mentioned that “Today’s celebration honors all the armed forces of our country which are the spearhead that allows for the resolution of problems that are caused by the liquidity in the international system, and the speed in which our society moves on. As Greek-Cypriots we are proud, and we are grateful for the mission that the National Guard is setting out in these adverse conditions. Let’s use today as an opportunity to show respect towards our ancestors who fought, so we can live with freedom today.”
After the doxology ended, a program followed with precise exercises from the demonstration team, which with excellent coordination and impressive formations spread its enthusiasm to the audience.
A photography exhibition followed, in which rare and valuable material was presented from key historical moments for both the National Guard and for Republic of Cyprus, and from recent activities of the Armed Forces. In addition, a concert from the Military Music Department of the N.G was held at the Strovolos Municipal Theater with the theme “Musical and Historical Retrospection”
At the concert the Minister of Defense, Mr. Savvas Angellides, the Mayor of Strovolos, Mr. Andreas Papacharalambous, the Mayor of Kithrea, Dr. Petros Kareklas, representatives of associations, The Chief of the National Guard Lieutenant General Ilias Leontaris, the hierarchy of the National Guard’s General Staff, representatives of associations and the general crowd were present.
After the conclusion of the concert, the Chief of the National Guard mentioned that the goal of the day was to remind people of who we are, where we come from, and where we must aim. The Minister of Defense, concluded the night congratulating the organizers of the concert, he mentioned that the country is very proud of the NG and that State supports its development over time.
