CHOD’s Participation in the Tactical Meeting of the European Union (EU) Military Committee

The Tactical session of the European Union (EU) Military Committee on CHODs level took place in Brussels on 6 and 7 November 2017. The meeting was attended by the Chief of the National Guard Lieutenant-General Ilias LEONTARIS.

The main topic of the meeting was EU military operations and missions aimed at promoting peace, strengthening institutions and infrastructures of third countries, disrupting the trafficking of human beings, and combating piracy.

In addition to the operations, CHODs were briefed on the state of the implementation of the EU Global Security Strategy Implementation Action Plan on Security and Defense. There followed an exchange of views on PESCO and the Coordinated Annual Defense Report (CARD), which would enable the Union to address effectively the wide range of challenges it faces and to protect security and the interests of European citizens.

In addition, the CHODs discussed issues related to the fight against terrorism and extremism, as well as ways of improving the co-operation between EU and NATO.

On the sidelines of the Summit, General LEONTARIS had special bilateral contacts with his counterparts, the Chiefs of Malta, France and Spain, as well as with the Chairman of the EU Military Committee (CEUMC), General Mikhael KOSTARAKOS, and with General Curtis SCAPAROTTI, with its dual status as NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and US EUCOM.

The Chief of the National Guard General Staff also met with the Representative of Cyprus to the EU Political and Security Committee, the Chiefs of Armed Forces of Portugal, Italy, and the United Kingdom while he had a brief discussion with the Chiefs of Serbia and Jordan.

Finally, the Chiefs elected the Italian Chief of Defense General Glaudio GRAZIANO as the next Chairman of the Military Committee.

The next Tactical Session will take place in May 2018.
